VISTA Mentoring Program

Helping to nurture and grow programs in Virginia

AmeriCorps VISTA

The Virginia Mentoring Partnership’s VISTA Mentoring Program aims to build the capacity of mentoring programs and youth development organizations in Virginia. With the approval of VMP’s Board of Directors and with the support of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), VMP is proud to offer this program to the mentoring community. With a focus on the organizational systems that directly impact the quality of youth mentoring relationships, the VISTA Members Mentoring Program infuses human capital resources into select start-up or existing host mentoring programs to support and/or develop organizational capacity, resiliency and to drive improved outcomes.

Specifics of the program:

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993.  VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years.

Twenty-five VISTA members have been competitively granted to mentoring host programs or youth development organizations across Central Virginia. Two VISTA members are dedicated to the capacity building in the VMP offices as program and communications/development specialists. A Special Projects Manager (supervisor) and a VISTA Leader are dedicated to the VISTA project and will be housed in the VMP offices through also regularly in the field with the host sites.

VISTA projects will support the development and improvement of organizational systems for mentoring programs.  An emphasis will be placed on the implementation of initiatives to support stronger mentoring relationships and increase the number of matches, especially where mentoring gaps have been identified, across Central Virginia.

All programs will be engaged in mentor recruitment with full involvement of the VISTA member and will also focus on one or more of the following areas*:

  • Program Development and/or Program Start-up
  • Marketing and Recruitment
  • Mentor and Mentee Training
  • Match Support
