Outstanding Individual Mentors

Marty Bland, Capital One Mentorships Program, Richmond

“Marty’s tireless efforts and energy have inspired many others to get involved. His consistency and commitment is the perfect model for others to follow that want to change a child’s life for the better.”
-Jim Kresge, Capital One Associate

The motto “Each One Reach One” could describe Marty Bland’s dedication to youth mentoring. But his efforts to recruit, lead, and mentor typically exceed that description – when Marty steps up to recruit mentors he reaches not just one – but many. Likewise, Marty has mentored not one, but two students at Broad Rock Elementary school for three years. He plans to mentor them through high school as well as continue his enthusiastic and successful recruitment efforts at Capital One.

Dr. Robert N. Melvin, Success-Oriented Students (S.O.S.) Youth Empowerment Program, Woodbridge

“Our youth have come to know the true meaning of success by the principles Dr. Melvin has instilled in them."
- Bishop Eugene V. Reeves, Founder/Pastor, New Life Anointed Ministries, International

Dr. Robert N. Melvin is a lifeline for many. His work in youth program development over the past 25 years has changed the lives of countless young men, women, and their families – people who are seeking to rebuild their lives after incarceration, graduate from high school, and attend college. After recognizing the impact a mentor had in his own life at a critical age, Dr. Melvin dedicated his life to mentoring young people in Northern Virginia, but the impact of his program development, life coaching, and commitment to volunteerism reaches far beyond.
