Regional Training Institutes

Regional Training Institutes 2010

Sustainable programs. Sustainable relationships.

Sustainability is a buzz word in the media today. VMP cares about sustainability too, but when we talk about sustainability, we mean well-designed, mentoring programs that last. Research shows that mentoring programs with good infrastructure create sustainable relationships. These lasting relationships can have a greater impact for children and youth.

To build a strong infrastructure, program leaders should be knowledgeable of and well-trained in how to implement best practices. VMP has established Regional Training Institutes (RTI) to provide training in the Elements of Effective Practice for mentoring program providers in the state of Virginia.

The RTI consist of two, day-long workshops. Each workshop focuses on part of the "Checklist for Effective Mentoring Programs." Each session includes additional information on a specific topic of interest to mentoring programs, such as fundraising, gangs, or mentoring immigrant youth.

What do we mean when we say “Best practices?”
Research shows that technical assistance provided to mentor program operators on best practices helps strengthen program infrastructure and increases opportunities for positive youth development. Best practices (or Elements of Effective Practice) include: developing a statement of purpose, having sound recruitment and retention processes, volunteer training, eligibility screening, matching, monitoring, recognition, closure steps, and evaluation procedures.

Each Regional Training Institute provides attendees with information they need to establish or improve their mentoring program. VMP staff is available for personal program consultation at each RTI. Improved knowledge of best practices encourages sustainable programs. And those sustainable programs in turn can train and support volunteers that provide high quality mentoring for Virginia’s youth.
