What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a caring and structured relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.
What is a mentor?
A role model is defined as one whose life and experiences provide a concrete image of who a younger person can become.
By contrast, a mentor is someone who lends guidance and support to enable the young person to become whomever they choose to be.
If the role model's message is "Be like me," the mentor's message is "I will help you be whomever you want to be."

What is a mentor/tutor?
A mentor/tutor provides academic support and guidance. VMP trains mentors around the state who are also volunteering in a tutoring capacity. We believe, to be an effective tutor one must also be considered a mentor, a caring adult who lends guidance and support, while bringing out the strengths of a student that already exist and helping them develop new skills.
